As expected, Prime Minister Najib Razak failed to turned up at a forum organized by the Bersih movement for free and fair polls aimed to enable both sides of the political divide to explain to the people their manifestos ahead of the coming general election.
However, Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim came as scheduled, receiving a rousing welcome from the crowd that packed the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall on Wednesday night.
"Of course we are disappointed. We had hoped he would send someone," Bersih co-chair Ambiga Sreenevasan told Malaysia Chronicle on the sidelines of the forum.
"He missed the chance, he should have come," Samad Said, Bersih's other co-chair, told Malaysia Chronicle, referring to Najib's snubbing the opportunity to clarify and push the Umno-BN's manifesto to voters.
Public must be given the chance to evaluate the pros and cons
Anwar, who held the floor with aplomb, spoke for nearly an hour spoke on the need to stop the "corruption rot" in the country and how badly Malaysia needed to raise its competitiveness level to regain its attractiveness to investors.
He took several questions from the moderator, focusing on illicit outflows and how it was damaging the economy and widening the gap between the have and have-nots. He also vowed to abolish the PTPTN student loans and to support "all schools". It is part of the Pakatan's manifesto to provide free education up to university level for all citizens.
Malaysia will be holding its 13th general election on May 5. There is great anticipation that GE13 - touted to be the "dirtiest election ever" - will also be a landmark ballot that might see the country's first ever regime change.
Both Anwar's Pakatan Rakyat and Najib's Umno-BN have already revealed their manifestos, with the PR first by nearly 2 months and the Umno-BN accused of copying from their rivals' 'People's Hope' manifesto. The Umno-BN's plan was unveiled 'live' on national TV while the Opposition was offered only a 10-minute slot to present theirs to the people.
Both sides have also accused each other of populist measures that would bankrupt the nation if implemented and Bersih had organised the event in the hope of prodding both sides into clarifying their plans for the country so as to enable voters to evaluate the pros and cons of the contesting coalitions.
"I guess we are not surprised that he has chosen not come. But most important, even if he chooses to snub the people, he must make sure that Umno-BN implements its manifesto properly and without corruption," PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli, who also spoke at the event, told Malaysia Chronicle.
Fear of debate or fear of Anwar
Indeed, the 59-year-old Najib is notorious for his fear of public debates especially with nemesis Anwar, who is known for his oratorical skills. This is why Bersih called the event a "Common Conversation" about the 2 manifestos rather than a "Debate" on the plans.
Moderating tonight's program was Bersih steering committee member Dr Ahmad Farouk Musa, who had earlier promised the show would go on regardless of whether Najib turned up. Most of the Bersih's steering committee was also present including Maria Chin Abdullah.
"Since Najib claimed that this country should the best democracy in the world, he must prove that he is willing to debate as is practised in democratic countries," Harakahdaily had reported Farouk, who also heads Islamic Renaissance Front, as saying.

Barisan Nasional (BN) is confident of achieving a major victory by capturing the parliamentary seats in the Federal Territory of General Election-13 (13GE), May 5, Deputy Federal Territories BN chairman Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.
ReplyDeleteIn a talk that, he constantly made accusations to the Election Commission (EC) as well as claims General Election-13 (GE-13) to be held on May 5 as the dirtiest in the country since the election journal GE- 1 in 1959.
ReplyDeleteAmbiga closeness with the opposition even more evident when at the same stage of talks, he lifted a thick woman and 'Iron Lady' by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
ReplyDeleteAllegations and accusations made against Ambiga also very silence his action on the crisis that occurred in the selection of the Central Working Committee (CEC) DAP at the end of last year.
ReplyDeleteIn contrast, in the lecture stage, he turned his attention to the audience blame the mainstream media does not give space to the opposition when launching their manifesto.

ReplyDeletePrime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's call to party members to acknowledge and redress their weaknesses has received support from Umno's top leaders.
ReplyDeleteParty vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the labelling of Umno as 'racist' should be studied as the party, being the backbone of the Barisan Nasional (BN), had to unite all communities.
ReplyDelete"Whatever the allegations hurled at Umno, party members should rather not dwell on them negatively but instead, work hard for the well-being of the people.
ReplyDelete"Umno members must not be arrogant. What we should do is to shoulder the trust and responsibilities and carry out the pledges (in the manifesto)," he said.
ReplyDeleteUmno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Umno must find the special factor that would strengthen the party, apart from keeping its struggles alive so that it would continue to remain as the people's choice.
ReplyDelete"With acknowledgement, we will be able to find a distinction by which this sacred Malay party would be viewed differently from other parties, and thus, maintain the people's trust," he said.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Umno had every reason to celebrate the party's victory as it had managed to win 88 of the parliamentary seats, compared to 79 in the general election in 2008.
ReplyDeleteNevertheless, he supported Najib's call that Umno members should engage in self-acknowledgement and ponder why the party had lost its former strength and no longer able to draw the support of certain parties.
ReplyDelete"The leader (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) has said he would contemplate on this. All of us should ask and study why there is disunity among the Malays.

ReplyDeleteUmno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said while Umno members should understand Najib's message to move forward, the BN structure should be reviewed to enable the cooperation with other BN components parties to be further enhanced, in preparation for the next general election.
Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said Wanita Umno should resolve its weaknesses to gain more support in partnership with the Youth and Puteri wings.

ReplyDeletePuteri Umno chief Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said the party needed to go back to basics, in its struggles and work on pockets of areas where support was lacking.
ReplyDeletePeople's Progressive Party president Datuk M. Kayveas said the BN's results in GE13 would inspire his party to work harder.
ReplyDeleteTun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and senior Umno leaders have expressed support for the call by party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for the party to address its weaknesses so as to have the continued support of the people.
ReplyDeleteThe recently-concluded GE13 saw Umno improving its seats to 88 from the 79 it secured in 2008 but Najib felt that the party needs to be humble and correct its weaknesses before seeking another mandate in the 14th general election due within the next five years.
He said this at an event to celebrate Umno's 67th anniversary celebrations at the Putra World Trade Centre here on Saturday night.
ReplyDeleteDr Mahathir said Najib's address was timely and reminded him of Umno's earlier days.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDelete“I see a lot of the party's fighting spirit returning. The party has the right to celebrate having won the most seats (88).
“But we must reflect on our weaknesses as well,” he said, adding that identifying and improving on the weaknesses were vital to strengthen the party.
ReplyDelete“We must ask ourselves why we are not as strong as before and why there's no support from certain groups,” the former prime minister added.
ReplyDeleteWanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said reflection was important in order to overcome political challenges, pledging that the women's wing would never give up the party's struggle.
ReplyDeleteShe admitted, however, that there was disappointment in the party despite its good performance in GE13 and called on women members to heed the president's call to reflect on the weaknesses.
ReplyDeleteParty vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the labelling of Umno as “racist” should be studied as the party, being the backbone of Barisan Nasional, had united all communities.

Another Umno vice-president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said Umno must find the “special factor” that would strengthen the party, apart from keeping its struggles alive so that it would continue to remain the people's choice.
ReplyDeleteUmno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is overseas, said in his message that a more comprehensive and radical transformation process was needed.
ReplyDelete“This is to allow Umno to become a Malay, Islamic and Malaysian political party which is dynamic, inclusive and visionary so that the party can become universal in terms of its struggle without forgetting its original objectives,” he said.
ReplyDeleteIn his address, Najib had also stated that Umno, which has been in power continuously for more than six decades, could be considered the world's most successful political party.
ReplyDeleteHe reiterated that Umno was not a racist party but inclusive and moderate.
ReplyDeleteMusa said the government would look into the issue of low power tariff which is seen as the main barrier to the development of biomass project in the State.
ReplyDeleteThe low-tariff and high equipment costs for empty fruit bunches (EFB) plant are identified as the main barrier to biomass project due to the fact that EFB fuel requires the use of advanced technologies.
