GE13: Advantage BN

With just two days to go before nominations for the country’s 13th general election, the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) seems to be ahead in the race, especially in terms of candidate selection and preparation for the polls.

The BN’s systematic approach in ironing out seat swaps among component parties, the early announcement of candidates, minimal back biting and the ability to drum-up support for the candidates have all led to the BN leading the fight.

Pakatan Rakyat, made up of PAS, PKR and DAP, cannot be faulted for this. The coalition officially formed after the 2008 general election has yet to put a system of picking candidates for the 222 parliamentary and 505 state seats up for grabs in this election.

Pakatan’s announcement of candidates is also unplanned and done in an ad-hoc basis compared to the BN, which announced its candidates in an orderly fashion. The BN announced its candidates at two levels. One announcement was made by the respective component parties while another was done by the respective state menteris besar.

The opposition pact meanwhile has been announcing candidates at press conferences, late night ceramahs and such. And even in doing so, the opposition has yet to decide on candidates for some “problematic” seats.

Seat squabbling is made public, which in turn erodes voter confidence in the opposition’s ability to rule the country for the next five years.

The problem is not only confined to picking of candidates.

Painting the town blue

BN has started hitting the ground even with two days to go before nomination. Their presence is felt through posters, banners and other election paraphernalia. They have basically painted the town blue — the colour of BN.

While the BN election machinery has started moving in low gear, the opposition pact has yet to crank up its engine.

Pundits and observers expect the Pakatan Rakyat election machinery to move into full gear upon the completion of the nomination process Saturday afternoon.

“This will happen provided they avoid sabotage by those who did not get seats. They will need to move as a team. Pakatan is not the opposition of 2008. Some leaders are making strategic moves to ensure his or her supporters get seats so it would be easier for them in party elections. The thinking and mindset of voters today is not the same as in 2008.

“But if your aim is to capture the federal government, this should not be case. They should have decided on the parliamentary candidates by now. Pakatan Rakyat had a clear five years unlike BN which underwent a leadership change in 2009.

“(BN chief and Prime Minister) Najib had only four years not only to steady the BN and its component parties but also introduce fresh and appealing programmes and policies for the country,” said an analyst who declined to be named.

Pakatan component parties too are not very compromising when it comes to seat swaps or even giving up a certain seat for the sake of the opposition pact.

“Nobody wants to give up…all three (PKR, DAP and PAS) are adamant on the seats they want to contest. We must have the give and take attitude practiced by BN component parties. That shows their maturity.

“They have been through so many elections together. We are just taking baby steps as a coalition,” an opposition party leader told FMT.

Another factor which has led to confusion in the opposition camp is meeting demands of warlords.

They, in some cases, demand that a certain candidate be placed in a particular seat. Opposition party leaders are unable to clampdown these warlords as any action against them, now, would lead to sabotage on the ground and result in loss of the seat.

While BN seems to be slightly ahead in this polls for now, the ground shifts fast during the campaign period.

Anything can happen in the two week period before 13.3 million eligible Malaysians go to the ballot box.

  1. We now have an idea on the key strategies and missteps. POLLING is 17 days away. The keener observers would probably be thinking of a quick visit to Gelang Patah to witness this series' biggest fight -- Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman versus Lim Kit Siang.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Over the last few days, the DAP's chess-move has morphed beyond a fleeting shimmy as previously suggested. Relocating the "king", Lim Kit Siang, as in chess of course, to Gelang Patah was soon followed by moving another piece, Teo Nie Ching, out of Serdang.

    ReplyDelete
  3. This manoeuvre saw her hurtling down the North-South Expressway to Kulai. Does this mean more inter-state movements to follow? As it turned out, DAP's Johor assault must have rattled its allies, Parti Keadilan Rakyat and Pas which had been exaggerating, under the circumstances, its chances in Johor.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Unwittingly for DAP, the Ghani-Kit Siang contest will accentuate the battle lines of a doggedly oppositionist culture against a tradition of producing credible policies and accumulating goodwill and a track record.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Ghani helped to conceive the South Johor Development Region, the precursor to Iskandar Malaysia, the brightest regional-growth showcase. While it is folly to rush to making mega judgments, it is true that Ghani's task is to defeat Kit Siang.

  6. He was making this point yesterday, maintaining that he was no longer the candidate for menteri besar, a post he held since 1995, freeing him to focus on his task. This compares with Kit Siang who will be holed up in Gelang Patah with almost no free time to campaign in Penang, where BN has a distinct strategy.

    ReplyDelete
  7. As one tactical detail leads to another, BN is digging in for a protracted battle to regain Penang, which means it is not going to agonise over a narrow miss this time around.

  11. Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, the former menteri besar of Terengganu, heads back to a parliamentary constituency. Umno had, in the post-November 1999 elections, turned to Idris to realign its focus after a shock defeat to Pas in Terengganu.

  13. Idris had been a deputy minister serving in the same ministry as Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed (Entrepreneurial Development). They are somewhat similar, the two. A think-tanker in mode, Idris went big -- but almost always with minimal fuss -- on education and housing when BN-Umno rode back into power in Terengganu in 2004.

  14. In composing the list of candidates, Najib must have taken a multi dimensional outlook. ONE, he knows he must secure a comfortable majority. To help him deliver a big win, Najib who had risen through the ranks since his days as deputy chief of Umno Youth, has redrafted experienced hands.

Isa goes to a new parliamentary seat, Jempol, while Shahidan returns to Arau, the parliamentary constituency he first won in 1986.

  21. THREE, this is also about fashioning the likely composition of the cabinet, hence, perhaps the return of personalities such as Idris.

    ReplyDelete
  22. At the other corner, Pakatan Rakyat has long promised to parade a cast far more impressive than those fielded in the 2008 general election when some greenhorns and dubious characters had won unexpectedly.

  24. The full line-up has not been named. There is indeed space still, and time, for the three parties to produce a blockbuster cast. To plan ahead and bring in fresh young talent, one must be able to persuade those who had been around like forever to make way.

The widely expected decisions by Pakatan Rakyat (PR), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and State Reform Party (STAR) to contest almost all the seats in Sabah, especially state seats, has given the Sabah Barisan Nasional’s (BN) chances of repeating its virtual clean sweep in 2008 a huge boost.

With the decisions, the opposition parties are doing the BN a big favour and make winning for the ruling coalition much easier as only a handful of seats are going to see one-on-one fights, and the BN is expected to be the biggest winners in multi-cornered battles where opposition votes would be split.

STAR Sabah yesterday said that for now it will contest in 35 state and 13 parliamentary seats but will add even more candidates just before nomination day tomorrow, as it expects “turncoats” from both Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to cross over to them.

Judging from the lists of candidates announced by PR, Star and Sabah progressive Party (SAPP), voters in the State will yet again see a free for all election similar to the previous one held in 2008.

In the last general election, the BN made a virtual clean sweep of all the 60 state and 25 parliamentary seats, losing only one parliamentary constituency and one state seat to Democratic Action Party (DAP).

With the success of the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) initiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, leaders from the BN component parties here are already confident of repeating their outstanding feat.

Out of the 48 candidates announced by STAR so far, 23 of them will be standing in areas which will also be contested by fellow state-based opposition SAPP, who have announced their own candidates for 41 state and eight parliamentary seats.

“There are still more people coming in, we have to keep this confidential at the moment, but soon you will know from which BN component parties they are,” he said, adding that the rest of the line-up will be sorted out and announced by today, once the party has taken into consideration the emerging “new development”.

Jeffrey however confirmed he will be standing in Keningau against his elder brother Tan Sri Pairin Kitingan, as well as the Bingkor state seat, which he had also contested but lost in the 2008 election under PKR’s ticket.

He also said 90 per cent of STAR candidates would be new faces from among professional individuals, who were chosen based on their outstanding qualities and commitment towards the party’s struggle.

At the event he also received membership applications from former PKR Sabah youth chief Jafery Jomion as well as several PKR members from Penampang.

“We are standing on our own to prove to Umno and BN that USNO is still relevant in Sabah. The reason we are focusing on Semporna is because Umno said the area is their stronghold, and USNO in previous years had also said Semporna was its stronghold, so, we will see,” he said.
