Electric Vehicles (EVs) seem to be pushing their boundaries and Tesla has come out with its first contender for an electric super-car, with the introduction of the Renovo Coupe and Tesla Motors Inc. (TSLA) modified Model S.
Tesla’s Model S is now being offered as a customized muscle car; courtesy engineers at Saleen Automotive Inc. (SLNN). Saleen unveiled the modified and revamped Model S, calling it the “FourSixteen” while Renovo Motors introduced its stunning all-electric Coupe. Both the new electric super-cars made their debut yesterday, during Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach.
The Coupe has been dubbed “America’s First All-Electric Supercar”, by the Silicon Valley-based Renovo, and is truly a class apart. Built on a Shelby CSX9000 chassis, the car can reach a top speed of 120 mph running on lithium-ion batteries. Equipped with a 500 horsepower engine, it can hit the 60 mph mark in just 3.4 seconds. While unveiling the prototype at Pebble Beach, the company also announced plans to start production next year.
Armed with a 740-volt battery pack, almost double the size of the battery pack in the Model S, the Renovo Coupe can generate 1,000 lb-ft of torque, which enables the car to outperform Tesla’s Model S.
Despite the car’s impressive specs and Shelby styling, the car might not generate a lot of sales as it is priced at an astonishing $529,000. It is clear that the company aims to get the attention of wealthy and environment-conscious racing enthusiasts.
