DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng has urged PAS to declare immediately whether it is with Umno in giving unconditional support for Khalid Ibrahim to continue as Selangor Menteri Besar.
In a press statement today, Lim said PAS should not wait until after its August 17 meeting to make its stand known.
“Any delay in making this declaration is unacceptable because it does not measure up to the responsibility of the mandate of Selangor, where voters returned 15 PAS assemblymen in the 2013 general election,” he said.
“Can PAS’s 15 assemblymen say they are or are not with Umno in supporting Khalid?” he asked.
According to the Malaysian Insider, PAS Secretary-General Mustafa Ali has responded to Lim, insisting that the party would make its stand known only after the August 15 meeting.
Deputy Umno President Muhyiddin Yassin said yesterday that Umno’s 12 assemblymen would support Khalid.
Lim said failure by PAS to provide clarity would further erode Pakatan’s popular support and damage voters’ confidence in the coalition not only in Selangor but throughout the nation.
“If PAS refuses to endorse a change of Menteri Besar by replacing Khalid with PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, this will immediately lead to a break-up and end of Pakatan both in Selangor and nationally,” he said.
Pundits have said that the outcome of the August 17 meeting will decide the future of Pakatan. -FMT
