With just two minutes of normal time remaining, Real Madrid players knew they just needed to hang on to hold a huge advantage in the Spanish Super Cup.
But Atletico Madrid striker Raul Garcia wasn't reading from the same script and, inexplicably unmarked at the back post from a corner, popped up to score an equaliser in the 88th minute.
Real Madrid had earlier taken the lead when James Rodriguez scored his first goal for his new club after his blockbuster arrival from Monaco, but the European Champions could not hold on in the Spanish curtain-raiser.
The two clubs will now head back to the Vicente Calderon for the second-leg on Friday night.
