Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today took a swipe at long-time rival Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and said even a state election will not resolve the Selangor mentri besar crisis until his ambition to be prime minister is attained.
“Can call for snap polls but I think that won’t solve the problem as long as Datuk Seri Anwar is not the prime minister.
“Even to be the prime minister for a month, I think he will be satisfied, but he won’t let go of it,” he told reporters after a talk at the Perdana Leadership Foundation.
Selangor has been embroiled with the crisis with Anwar’s attempt to remove Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as MB since the “Kajang Move” in March.
Refusing to step down, Khalid retaliated by firing 5 DAP and PKR executive councillors, with one resigning.
He kept four PAS state assemblymen after receiving support from party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and several other conservatives in the party.
Today, Dr Mahathir stressed that Anwar’s end goal is to be the prime minister, stressing that the move to be mentri besar is merely a stepping stone.
“Don’t think he just wants to be the mentri besar.
“To him mentri besar is small, he wants to be the prime minister,” the former prime minister said.
