In a sign that even deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin is frustrated with prime minister Najib Razak's refusal to call for election, the former has pre-empted Najib's announcement by saying that parliament would be dissolved before its expiry this month end.
"I do not think the prime minister will wait the full five years before dissolving Parliament. Elections will be held in the next few weeks this April,” Muhyiddin was quoted as saying.
Last week, MCA’s daily The Star reported that parliament could only be dissolved in mid-April, after Najib's return from umrah (lesser pilgrimage).
Muhyiddin also seems to concur with widespread disquiet over the unprecedented delay in calling for election.
“Election won’t be long... I know the people say they have been waiting; they’re tired of waiting. But I am confident they who have been waiting for so long are impatient to mark a cross for Barisan Nasional,” said Muhyiddin, who is widely tipped to replace Najib in the event of another weak victory for BN.
Meanwhile, PAS secretary general Mustafa Ali urged Pakatan Rakyat’s election machinery to stop focusing on election date, saying it could be a ploy to divert people’s attention while allowing time for BN to 'copy' the coalition’s popular manifesto ahead of the dissolution.
