Anwar Ibrahim has a slight edge over Najib Abdul Razak as a prime ministerial candidate, according to a survey by Universiti Malaya's Democratic and Election Centre (Umcedel).
The survey, involving 1,407 respondents residing in Peninsular Malaysia in early April, indicated that 43 percent of voters believe Anwar was qualified to be prime minister while 24 percent of voters disagreed and the rest were unsure.
As for Najib, 39 percent of voters said he was qualified to be the prime minister, while 31 percent disagreed. Another 30 percent were unsure.
Interestingly, 54 percent of Malay respondents said Anwar was qualified to be prime minister while only 28 percent said the same for Najib.
Among first-time voters, 48 percent of respondents believed Anwar to be qualified as prime minister while 25 percent of respondents said the same for Najib.
Compared to Umcedel's last survey results in January, Najib's rating had dropped four points while Anwar and increased by one point.
In terms of Malay respondents, Najib's rating had dropped by 18 points while Anwar's rating had rose by nine points.
Anwar seen as 'more Islamic'
Both Najib and Anwar are pretty much neck and neck in other areas.
Najib has a slight edge in terms of "friendly-ness" compared to Anwar.
Fifty-four percent of respondents believe Najib to be more "people-friendly" compared to 46 percent who said the same for Anwar.
“Of course Najib is higher (in the polls) - he appears on TV almost every day, compared to Anwar who only appears when there is something not good about him,” said Umcedel director Mohd Redzuan Othman at a press conference today.
Najib is also seen as slightly more capable administration-wise compared to Anwar, while Anwar has a slight lead in terms of accountability and vision to develop the country.
However, Anwar has a clear lead in terms of exhibiting Islamic virtues, with 43 percent of respondents stating that he has such values, as compared to 37 percent saying the same for Najib.
Sex video doesn't sell
Meanwhile, the survey also found that 62 percent of respondents said they were not influenced by a sex video of an alleged Pakatan Rakyat leader floating on the Internet.
Thirty nine percent of the respondents said they were convinced that the sex video was a piece of "Umno propaganda" aimed at making personal attacks, while 39 percent said they were unsure.
Twenty two percent of respondents disagreed that the clip was "Umno propaganda".
“It appears that the smear campaign that is going on (in the mainstream media) on Anwar, is not really having a bad effect on him,” said Redzuan.
Meanwhile, the 63 percent of survey respondents said they wanted to see a debate between Najib and Anwar while 19 percent disagreed with the idea.

Perdana Menteri Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak mungkin pada pandangan sesetengah pihak bukanlah calon yang tepat kerana tidak menunjukan ciri-ciri keislamaan akan tetapi segala usah beliau adalah untuk membantu masyarakat beragama Islam juga dan pembangunan serta perubahan yang dibawa tidak membelakangkan ajaran Islam. Buktinya;
Anwar has the habit of not practising what he preaches. If he talks about anti money politics, he is the one who is the head of money politics during the election for the post of UMNO Deputy President in 1993.
ReplyDeleteCorruption was highest when Anwar was Minister of Finance, hence people call him Father of corruption.
ReplyDeleteWhen Anwar became the leader of ABIM, Islamic principles were made his basis of struggle to meet his political ambition. When he joined UMNO, all the principles and Islamic struggle were only a mask whereas his actual struggle is the contrary. Anwar became a hypocrite when he led the congregational prayer and read the sermon on Friday prayers while he himself is not clean, and his morality is full of sins. His reading of the Quranic verse on The Disbelievers was wrong. This had been commented by intellectuals themselves. Anwar had always been seen wearing silk when he was leading the prayers.
ReplyDeleteMany people were surprised that the US government had welcomed Anwar's arrival in the US as an eminent statesman with 21 gunshots and a red carpet. While Dr Mahathir himself had never been welcomed in such a manner. A similar welcome had been given to Boris Yeltsin, while at that time Gorbachev was the President of the Soviet Union. Soon after that, the Soviet Union broke up and Boris Yeltsin rose as the new President of Russia. Can't the US do the same thing to Malaysia? Anything can happen and the people have many impressions of Anwar when they interpret this extraordinary friendship. Is Anwar an agent of CIA?
ReplyDeleteAnwar was not happy with the decision to bring back all members of 46 party led by Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, hence he tried to stop Razaleigh from all levels so that the members of 46 party would not get any position in UMNO divisions. As a leader, it is certainly unhealthy to be vindictive whereas the members of 46 have a sincere wish to disband their party and join UMNO again.
ReplyDeleteWestern universities have a reputation for rigorous thinking and objective analysis – that's why many Malaysians value the experience of getting a degree in places like the UK, Australia and the US. So it's natural that observers of Malaysia's general election will seek opinions of academics from these places. After all, if you're not in the same country you're less likely to have your own biases, right?
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, this perception of objectivity is increasingly being used for political ends. We have noticed a growing trend of 'activist academics' who exploit their position by dressing up their opinions as facts. Local academics are more easily identified by political allegiance -at least Dr. Ong Kian Ming has nailed his colours to the mast in standing as a candidate for DAP.
ReplyDeleteWe're used to Anwar Ibrahim talking down our country for his own political ends, but it's sad to see the same being done by the opposition's international allies. Aside from whatever political views you have, we can all agree that analysis of our election is being badly served by agenda-driven academics.
ReplyDeleteTake Bridget Welsh, an American-trained academic based in Singapore. She is possibly the most frequent academic commentator of the Malaysian election, used by many international media sources as an independent voice. But how many of them realise that just a few years ago, she worked for the opposition?
ReplyDeleteWelsh is a regular contributor to Malaysiakini, the pro-Opposition news portal. She is extremely close to many Opposition politicians including those from the PKR and PAS. And most damningly of all, this so-called independent voice provided advice and recommendations on political campaign and strategies to the DAP and PKR during the 2008 General Election. Clearly, she's closely aligned with the Opposition – and has made their agenda her own.
ReplyDeleteJust listen to her interview with Radio Australia this week, where she concluded by stating: "[Malaysian voters] have a choice between sticking with the status quo or actually choosing people who have a record of being in state government for five years, who have had a reasonably solid record of addressing these issues, particularly in areas of governance."
ReplyDeleteIn this interview she also did her best to rubbish the PM's new candidates, claiming that on average there was a 50% turnover every election anyway and that when Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi came back in 2004 it was 70%. But does this factual academic declaration stand up to scrutiny?
ReplyDeleteIn 2013, 49% of BN's state candidates – and 33% of its parliamentary candidates – are new. The 2008 figures were 20% and 21% respectively. This time around, BN is fielding more than twice as many new candidates as last time. No wonder Najib is talking about "BN Baru".
ReplyDeleteThis sloppiness extends to her on-the-record statements, too. Welsh seems more interested being a quote generator than providing academic insight. Her comments to Bloomberg this week were typically confused: Reacting to Najib's remarks about the impact an opposition victory would have on the stock market, she said, "it shows he's getting defensive and moving into attack mode... he appears to be painting it in black and white as a zero-sum game".
ReplyDeleteEven if we ignore the fact that Welsh has long standing and documented friendships with key members of the Opposition, or that her commentary and "analysis" of Malaysia and its election has been largely agenda-driven, the truth is that she has fatally undermined her own claims to impartiality. By working for the opposition openly during the last election – and campaigning covertly during this one – Bridget Welsh has revealed she is no independent voice, but just another one of Anwar's activist academics
ReplyDeleteRAKYAT PERMATANG PAUH PILIH BN , BIAR ANWAR JADI PENSYARAH SELEPAS PRU13 - DR MAZLAN
- BERNAMA

ReplyDeletedengan majoriti mudah memerlukan 19 kerusi manakala majoriti dua pertiga pula 24 kerusi.
ReplyDeleteWhat does it take for voters to believe in between these two leaders?
Short answer: Credibility. "Credibility, according to leadership schoolars is the foundation of leadership"(Kauzer & Posner,2010)
ReplyDeleteKajian UMCEDEL tidak tepat. Tiga kajian lain menyangkal kajian kajian UMCEDEL;
ReplyDeleteKajian Merdeka Center For Opinion Research mndpati populariti Naji 65%.
Kajian ASLI-Asian Strategic & Leadership Institute mengatakan BN akan menang PRU13.
The Economist-Intelligence Unit-melaporkan BN akan memenangi PRU13.
ReplyDeleteRasuahan negara semakin banyak. Ini juga menyebabkan Najib dicabar.
ReplyDeleteCan Anuar be trusted?
