MCA today dropped former party president Ong Tee Keat from contesting in the May 5 general election. The Pandan parliamentary constituency will now be contested by 39-year-old lawyer Garry Lim.
Also not in the party’s list of candidates was vice-president Senator Gan Ping Sieu and Raub incumbent Ng Yen Yen, another party vice president.
Both Ong and Gan are said not to be on good terms with party president Dr Chua Soi Lek.
In announcing the party’s candidates today, Chua said the party would contest in 37 parliament and 90 state seats. Sixty-eight of the 127 candidates are new faces.
A 25-year-old aspirant is the youngest contestant from the party, contesing for a state seat.
The five female candidates fielded are also new faces.
Chua said 19 or 51.3 per cent of the 37 candidates for parliament seats were new faces while 49 contenders for the 90 state seats were also new faces.
MCA contested in 40 parliamentary and 90 state seats in the 2008 general election.
Stay united, urges Chua
Chua also said MCA must employ new strategies to face the battle, and this was why the party had decided to loan some of its seats to the BN component parties.
“This is part of the new strategies and we will get the seats back in addition of new seats from constituency delineation after the GE,” he said.
He further urged those not selected as candidates to place the benefit of the party as priority and show “loyalty and love to the party”.
“We shall stay united in facing the GE. This coming GE is a do-or-die battle for MCA, we should set our differences aside and ensure all BN candidates will emerge victorious because the outcome of the GE will affect MCA’s political future and the nation,” he added.
Veterans recalled
Among the old guards picked as candidates this time include Yap Pian Hon (Serdang), Hoh Khai Mun (Raub), Ong Ka Chuan (Tanjong Malim), Donald Lim (Selayang), Teh Kim Poo (Klang), Dr Yeow Chai Thiam (Seremban) amd Khoo Soo Seang (Tebrau). Their ages are from 58 to 70.
All MCA ministers and deputy ministers apart from Ng Yen Yen had been retained. They are Liow Tiong Lai (Bentong), Wee Ka Siong (Ayer Hitam), Hou Kok Chung (Kluang), Kong Cho Ha (Lumut), Lee Chee Leong (Kampar), Chua Tee Yong (Labis) and Chor Chee Heung (Alor Setar).
The youngest MCA parliamentarian candidates are Nicole Wong and Tan Kok Eng, both are 33.
Nicole will be contesting in Seputeh where DAP is expected to name incumbent Teresa Kok for this seat. Tan meanwhile is the son of party stalwart Tan Chai Ho and will be contesting in Bandar Tun Razak, taking on Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim from PKR.
The oldest MCA parliamentarian candidate is Yap Pian Hon at Serdang, who is 70.

Pandan MP Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat is unperturbed over reports that he is not on MCA's list of possible candidates for the upcoming general election. He insisted that only Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has the final say on candidates.
ReplyDeleteIncumbent Pandan MP Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat is not listed as a possible candidate under MCA to defend the parliamentary seat.
ReplyDelete“Ong's name is not in the list prepared by the division and I am dependent on the list prepared by the division,” he added.
ReplyDeleteHe also introduced 39-year-old lawyer Gary Lim to reporters as MCA's choice of candidate for the constituency. “Gary is a new face and he does not have any baggage.
ReplyDeleteAt the same time, he said he could not stop Ong from contesting as an independent, and that it might even benefit Barisan Nasional to split votes for the Opposition.
ReplyDeleteGiven the fact that this nation needs new ideas and energy to drive it through the 21st century, first- time voters might be asking themselves which side is more serious about generational change amongst its MPs at GE13.
ReplyDeleteIs it Pakatan Rakyat, to which DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, 72, is so indispensable that he is needed to resolve the DAP-PKR spat in Gelang Patah? Or is it Barisan Nasional which today revealed that 66-year-old MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek will not stand in GE13.
ReplyDeleteNo one knows what conversations preceded his announcement on Thursday. But he tellingly said in a statement that he is declining to stand "in line with the renewal process of the party to reinvent and reinvigorate itself". In short, this means he is doing the right thing for the future of BN.
ReplyDeleteAnd on the way out he fired a well-aimed parting shot at Pakatan, which he said preaches about change but is loath to tell its aging warhorses that it is time to go for the good of the party.
ReplyDeleteSoi Lek said he will stay to lead MCA as president through GE13 and will doubtless play a key role in taking the fight to DAP.
ReplyDeleteAnd given that Kit Siang's rival won't be troubling him across the Dewan Rakyat chamber, one might think the DAP veteran would be magnanimous about Soi Lek's decision. But if you thought that you'd be wrong.
ReplyDeleteKit Siang said he felt "pity" for Soi Lek, showing that age has not dimmed the DAP veteran's ability to patronise. Perhaps he feels the same pity for PKR's own high-profile non-starter in GE13, PKR president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also not contesting? Kit Siang owes it to us to let us know.
ReplyDeleteSo what does Soi Lek's decision mean for undecided Chinese voters? Considering that he hasn't been an MP since resigning over "that" sex scandal in 2008, they might say it makes little difference. We also know that these voters enjoy a burgeoning direct rapport with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, which is ultimately the relationship that counts.
ReplyDeleteFirst-time voters now know that Najib's vow to make BN fresher and younger is not hot air. Perhaps these voters might also ask Pakatan how serious it is about bringing in new faces? So far there has been no evidence at all.
ReplyDeleteUPDATE MASYARAKAT CINA DARI BARAT SABAH :
ReplyDeleteMasyarakat Cina Keningau masih perlukan Pairin Kitingan
