GE13: Rumble in Foh Sang, Yong confronts rivals

KOTA KINABALU: Fed up with the ‘guerrilla tactics’ of his rivals, in particular the DAP, SAPP chief, Datuk Yong Teck Lee did what any gentleman would do and confront them, face to face.

At the Foh Sang car park where Pakatan Rakyat was holding its ceramah Wednesday night, Yong did a surprise show-up, stunning his opponents who had been bad-mouthing him and the SAPP the whole night.

At six minutes past nine o’clock, coolly walking up to where Chong Eng Leong and other local PR leaders were, Yong confronted the former Senator, who had earlier, once again, implicated the ex-Chief Minister as being involved in Project IC (also known as Project Dr M) – where foreigners were allegedly given Malaysian identity cards.

(Pic above - Huge crowd at SAPP Kopitiam Ceramah, Foh Sang) Yong sat down next to Chong to get an explanation and the good old surgeon meekly said he did not implicate Yong and would go on stage again to make the denial.

The moment he saw Yong, a stunned Hiew King Chiu bolted to another corner of the car park, holding a mike and yelling Ini Kali Lah, Ini Kali Lah, while another DAP candidate, Junz Wong sat frozen to his seat, noticeably pale despite the poor lighting.

Junz, the DAP man facing Yong in Likas, had earlier in the day described his opponent as “a man with no integrity”.

But given the opportunity to tell that to Yong straight to his face, Junz must have wished that a hole could appear at that moment to swallow him up. He sat down quietly, a nervous fidgety wreck.

This caused someone in the crowd to snigger, “if like this how then is he going to perform at the State assembly (if elected), must less give a speech in a Dewan dominated by UMNO men, led by the indomitable Samsuddin (Yahya of Sekong) the old adversary of Junz’ boss, Jimmy Wong”.

Yong also demanded that he be given the chance to go on stage to answer to all the lies his rivals had been making behind his back, but Fred Fung, the DAP man handling Hiew’s campaign refused, apparently on orders from his boss.

In his talk, the former Senator allegedly accused Yong of being involved in a scheme to issue identity cards to foreigners. When confronted Wednesday, he gave a feeble denial.

All this while, a female mc kept screaming into the microphone asking the deejay to play loud music and she was obliged when ‘gangnam’ style music came on the air, prompting Christina’s dance squad to go on stage.

Later Christina (PKR – Api Api) Edwin Bosi (DAP – Kapayan) and Hamid Ismail (PAS – Tanjung Aru) made their brief speeches before moving on to other places.

Throughout, Yong kept insisting he be allowed to go on stage to give his side of the story and to allow Eng Leong to make his clarification. But neither was allowed.

A couple of “tough guys” were at the side of Eng Leong to make sure he did not get to rise, while other hired guns stood nearby.

Police came in to cool tempers down and some 45 minutes later, Yong left, but not without telling Eng Leong that if PR did not allow him to clarify on their stage, he was always welcome to join the SAPP ceramah, some 100 meters away.

Chong Eng Leong never showed up.

An SAPP official is believed to have video-taped the entire proceeding, including recording Eng Leong’s denial about Yong being involved with Project IC.

One wonders why the police allowed two opposition ceramah to be held in the same area at the same time, knowing that it was potentially an explosive situation – knowing both sides were not on the same wavelength.

Later at his own party’s ceramah, Yong explained that he only wanted a chance to make a reply to the lies being spread about him and SAPP.

He said Sabah PKR leader, Chong En Leong was ready to go to the stage to clarify that Yong was not involved but the DAP elections director, Fred Fung did not allow it. Others like Hieu King Chiew and Christina Liew also refused to allow him to speak.

He told supporters that PKR chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was in the know of Project IC in Sabah as he was the deputy prime minister in 1994 when he was Sabah Barisan Nasional elections director.

“Why are they blaming me when Anwar knows it all? Chong is so close to (former chief minister) Osu Sukam and he knows it all too,” Yong said.

  1. You don't have to be a mathematical genius to realise why Sabah and Sarawak are being so fervently courted by both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat ahead of GE13. BN's fabled 'fixed deposit' states meant it swept all 25 Sabah federal seats in GE12, along with all but two in 31-seat Sarawak.

    ReplyDelete
  2. This means that both Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Seri Najib Razak will find it hard to keep away from Borneo as GE13 nears. With 56 of the nation's 222 Dewan Rakyat seats up for grabs, Anwar sees a potential windfall if he can record any sort of swing. This is also why he has courted defectors in Sabah. His alliance with SAPP along with Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin's APS and Datuk Seri Wilfred Bumburing's PPPS could automatically net him six seats, providing voters don't punish the latter two for switching sides. Not everyone is as supportive of party-hoppers as Anwar is.

    ReplyDelete
  3. In line with this optimism, Pakatan has begun leaking stories to the media about how it will win a whopping 145 seats at GE13 – which would be quite an achievement for a shaky coalition that won 82 last time around and has lurched from crisis to crisis since.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Will PAS members be driven to Umno because they prefer that to being in bed with DAP, who claim rights to the word "Allah" for their Bible? You bet. There are already genuine grass roots calls for PAS to leave Pakatan itself.

    ReplyDelete
  5. And conversely, could DAP supporters be driven back to BN out of fear of what PAS could do in power, when it unfurls its Islamic agenda? That's a tougher call, but no one should underestimate the fear the Chinese feel in places like Kedah and Kelantan.

  6. But back to Borneo, where it isn't just Pakatan Rakyat that is exuding confidence. Both Sabah and Sarawak have a lot of settlers and for that matter, a lot of low-income families. These are precisely the people who benefited from the three windfall payments last year totalling RM15,000 to settlers and the latest BR1M people's aid in the past month.

    ReplyDelete
  7. As Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said recently: "There are quite a large number of recipients, whose lives have been changed by the BR1M funds." "Based on the data and information we have received, I am confident that Sabah will remain a blue BN state," he said.

    ReplyDelete
  8. So much for PAS Spiritual Leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat's dismissal of BR1M aid as "cows and chickens". His comment insulted the most needy.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Najib is equally upbeat about the overall seat picture and made the point in Sarawak recently. He said he believes the rakyat would accept BN's candidates who have been selected in a nine-month process and have all been cleared by the MACC – a Najib initiative.

    ReplyDelete
  10. "I notice that the people's responses have been very encouraging because they are convinced that the transformation policies advocated by the BN will benefit the people and guarantee a better future," the Prime Minister said.

  11. There is another factor here that has been overlooked in all the Sabah and Sarawak hype. Could the reason for Anwar's near-obsession with Borneo be because his pollsters have told him that Malay and Indian voters in peninsula Malaysia have deserted the Opposition in droves? That would explain the latest spat in Johor, where PKR and DAP are scrapping over the few winnable Chinese seats.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Notice too that PKR's leaked seat forecast was 145 – close to, but beneath the magical 148 number for a two-thirds majority. No one wants to be seen predicting that big a win. A comfortable margin will suit BN at GE13. Just falling over the line will suit desperate and weary Anwar and his fractious coalition.

  13. Beware the opposition lies

Barisan Nasional leaders are continuously reminding voters not to be influenced by the lies spread by the opposition.

Caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa told reporters that this topic is always mentioned without fail in speeches made by BN campigners.

“The opposition fellows are slick and would not hesitate to lie through their teeth to try and convince the voters that they are the best choice, but all too soon people realise that it is empty promises,” said Musa.

  14. Beware the opposition lies

Musa had earlier spoken at a meet-the-people session held at the BN candidate for Kawang Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar’s residence in Kampung Dambai, here, Thursday.

He reiterated that BN’s good track record was enough and the additional manifesto proves their sincerity to develop the nation and benefit the people.

“I just hope that the people will not make the wrong decision, and instead give BN the continuous support by picking its candidates.

“Be careful and avoid from being influenced by the opposition’s dirty tactics,” he said.

  15. Beware the opposition lies

On another development, Musa also announced that the Kawang people’s application for grazing areas and communal titles have been approved.

“We have identified a few locations where the people would be issued communal title. Earlier, the title has been approved in Kampung Benoni and the land would be given to the landless.

“There is absolutely no truth in the claim that we have approved thousands of acres of land to giant companies because we know land belongs to the people, so we are returning it to the people,” he said.

  16. Beware the opposition lies

In his speech also, Musa added that BN has govern the nation for over five decades and throughout those years, the ruling government has not only brought development but is constantly improving itself to ensure that it stays relevant to the people besides meeting the growing needs.

He also advised the leaders not to be cocky, but instead work sincerely to assist their constituents.

Also present ar the event were BN candidates for Papar, Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin, and Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail (Pantai Manis).

  17. STOP THE LIES

Datuk Seri Musa Aman lashed out at Pakatan Perubahan Sabah (Sabah Alliance Movement) leader, Datuk Lajim Ukin for hitting below the belt in his campaign trail by telling lies to the constituents.

According to the (caretaker) Chief Minister, he was informed by the people here that Lajim who is contesting to defend his Beaufort MP seat under the Parti Keadilan Rakyat ticket had alleged that “Datuk Musa had already swapped the town’s football field and tamu ground.”

“But the District Officer has confirmed that the real owners of both the football field and tamu ground is Beaufort District Council,” he said to thunderous applause.

  18. STOP THE LIES

Officiating at the final leg of Yayasan Sabah roadshow with the people in the town football field on Thursday, Musa was puzzled with the opposition’s tactic accusing him of having taken the two parcels of land.

“I do have my own land in the kampong so what for I want to take the land (that is meant) for the people?” he posed.

“I have never touched him, or his name (Lajim) or make personal attacks,” said a visibly upset Musa.

“We do our campaigning in a gentlemanly manner. But suddenly without knowing anything I was turned into a villain with my name being tainted by the accusation in villages in this constituency.”

Musa said he had piles of records pointed to a certain leader being involved in a number of questionable land deals and transactions that did not favour the people of Sabah.

    ReplyDelete
  19. STOP THE LIES

He also asked the crowd at the road show if they knew who took more than 2,000 acres of the people’s land in Kampung Nukahan and some 1,430 acres of land at Mile 60 to be sold to private companies.

“Who sold Cattle Farm (owned by the State government) and the thousands of acres of land in Telupid that belonged to the Department of Veterinary and Animal Service Industry (Dovsai)?”

“In Lingkungan, who sold the land to a company where the towkay got 80 per cent and Koperasi Pembangunan Desa (KPD) got only 20 per cent? This is a lop-sided deal.”

Musa said the people should also check who had signed off the pristine Kota Kinabalu sea waterfront (to be reclaimed for development that was eventually stopped later).

    ReplyDelete
  20. STOP THE LIES

“So this is the person they say is going to be the leader for Pakatan Rakyat and the hope of Pakatan?

“I have never given out thousands of acres of land to outside companies; instead I give out thousands of acres of land to the people of Sabah in Sook, Pensiangan, Kota Marudu through Communal Titles.

“So please don’t talk big of being the hope of the people. Stop telling lies,” he said.

  21. Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Panglima Yong Teck Lee issued a challenge to two leaders of the Sabah DAP, chairman Jimmy Wong and adviser Dr Hiew King Cheu, to a public debate at a coffee shop at Foh Sang here which is just next to DAP’s Luyang office.

  22. If Jimmy Wong and Dr Hiew are afraid to come to the coffee shop for a public debate, then Yong is willing to go to any public debate organized by these two DAP leaders.

  23. Yong who issued the challenge on April 10, is looking forward to a fair and open debate on the pressing issues of Sabah instead of hiding in the background and conducting a smear campaign, throwing baseless allegations against SAPP and Yong in particular.

  26. TRUTH OR LIES

Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad today claimed that his former deputy and current Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim was the main man behind citizenship-for-votes to immigrants in Sabah in the 1990s.

Clearly disputing Anwar’s previous claims of ignorance on the matter, Mahathir said the former was directly involved in the so-called “Project IC”, adding that at times, he (Anwar) had acted without orders from him (Mahathir)

“I had nothing to do with Project IC”, reiterates Anwar.

Anwar Ibrahim continues to deny any role in Project IC in Sabah, saying this matter was never brought to the cabinet, and neither did he attend or chair any meeting on it.

The Opposition leader also alleged that the project to grant blue identity cards to immigrants did not end in the 1990s and that it continued during the tenure of former Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and went on until last year, covering Najib Abdul Razak’s reign as well.

Mat Swadi, who claims to be a Pak Lah loyalist, laid out his involvement in the whole affair and maintained the involvement of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the whole affair, and admitted being the mastermind to bring Umno to Sabah and remove Usno from the map.

These people playing with the Sabahan integrity and dignity. We are the one who effected because such immoral project. It would be good if RCI, Sabah can call these leaders to testify.
