Malaysian paying more on car excise duties

Citing a report by The Edge, Rafizi Ramli said he was not surprised that Malaysia’s car prices are the second highest in the world due to our taxation system.

“BN always complains that Malaysians are not paying market price a litre of petrol or diesel, and this is made as a reason to hike fuel price. But, BN refuses to reduce car prices so that Malaysians can purchase it at market price, like other countries,” Rafizi Ramli said in a statement.

Using his own calculation, the PKR strategic director said a total of RM300 month would be spend on paying excise duty in financing a RM60,000 loan for a car over a period of seven years.

The total was RM111 higher than the monthly average subsidies for fuel received by a household with RM5,000 income a month, Rafizi added.

The Pandan Member of Parliament said that was the reason why the people could not compromise with Barisan Nasional (BN) on fuel price hike because it was unfair when at the same time they had to bear among the highest tax on vehicles.

“This is clear unfairness and clearly oppressing the people. Worst, BN refuses to acknowledge this fact that it taxes people more than the fuel subsidies it gives to them,” said Rafizi.

As such, he said, he would continue to voice out against any price increase in fuel as long as there is no reduction on car prices. -HD
