Three-cornered fight for Pengkalan Kubor

TUMPAT: It will be a three-cornered fight for the Pengkalan Kubor by-election between Barisan Nasional’s Mat Razi Mat Ail, PAS candidate Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim and independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.

Izat Bukhary who contested in 2013, arrived at the nomination centre with three supporters earlier this morning and announced he had decided to contest again.

Born in Kota Baru and living in Kubang Kerian, Izat Bukhary, 47, said his appeal lay in the principles he was championing that differed considerably to those of the other candidates. He however declined to elaborate just what those principles were.

Among the senior Barisan leaders who showed up at the nomination centre were Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin with his vice-presidents Hishammuddin Hussein and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. MCA president Liow Tiong Lai was also present.

Showing his support for PAS was its spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat.
At 10am, returning officer Muhammad Sobri Ramli announced that nominations were closed.

The Pengkalan Kubor by-election will be held on Sept 25 to replace three-term BN assemblyman Noor Zahidi Omar, 57, who succumbed to lung cancer in China on Aug 20.
