Don’t betray PAS, Hadi tells PKR, DAP

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang today called on PKR and DAP to respect the spirit of Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) political consensus and to not make any unilateral decisions amid the worsening ties due to the prolonged Selangor mentri besar crisis.

In his keynote address at the opening of PAS’s 60th muktamar here, Hadi stressed that any form of tahaluf siyasi (political cooperation) must serve to strengthen the Islamist party and work in its favour, and not otherwise.

“In the history of PAS’s struggle, we have never betrayed our partners, therefore we ask that our partners do not betray this tahaluf.

“As a big political party, as big decisions must be decided together before it is executed,” he said to loud applauses from the audience.

Although Hadi did not elaborate on the context, he is likely referring to PKR’s continued push to install its president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the new Selangor MB.

Hadi has consistently supported embattled MB Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim in the past, and has openly stated his disapproval of Dr Wan Azizah, claiming that she was unfit to lead Malaysia’s richest state.

“This tahaluf must serve to strengthen the party and not otherwise.
“It will be unfortunate for us if this political cooperation results in those trying to weaken us, sowing discord until there are those drunk enough to want to fight among each other,” Hadi added.

The Marang MP pointed out that “political cooperation” does not mean PAS had to absorb the values of other parties or sacrifice its own principles.

“The goal of victory must be used to strengthen the principles of Islam,” he said.

He reminded party members that PAS has worked with all parties , even the federal government at one point , and that even though these pacts did not last PAS did not lose anything as it has always been consistent in its struggle.

“Only those who are steadfast with PAS will be safe, and those who do not will fall along the way.

“So let not there be anyone who feels he is too strong, impatient in the struggle and can challenge our (PAS’s) goals and purpose,” Hadi said.

He stressed that PAS will continue working alongside PKR and DAP as long as the consensus did not go against the party’s principles.

He also denied renewed rumours that PAS was in talks to join Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN), calling them “slanderous” allegations aimed at destroying the Islamist party.

Hadi recently broke ranks with PKR and DAP when he personally submitted three undisclosed names for the Selangor MB post to the palace two weeks’ ago.

PAS had initially agreed on two names — PKR president Dr Wan Azizah and PKR deputy President Azmin Ali — but their list has since been overtaken by Hadi’s choices for the post.

PKR and DAP’s position remains the same — to stick with a single MB nominee until and unless there are further developments with the palace.
