S’gor exco: Jais had to probe after tip-off

Selangor state exco member for Islamic affairs Sallehen Mukhyi said today the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) was only acting on a public complaint when they seized 321 copies of the Malay and Iban language Bible from the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) last Thursday.

“Jais received complaints from the public and had to investigate to find evidence,” Sallehen said when contacted today.

However, Sallehen declined to say what action would be taken by the state government against Jais officers who said they forgot to inform the menteri besar’s office on the raid.

“A police report has been lodged and the case is now under investigation and we will discuss this in the state exco meeting on Wednesday.

“Our stand is Jais can continue with their work until the police reveals their findings.

“It all depends on the police investigation before any action is taken. This is a grace period and we don’t want to interrupt Jais’ work,” he said.

Sallehen is due to meet BSM officials tomorrow morning and will give a statement shortly after.

Jais director Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad, however, could not be reached for comment.

However, Jais public relation officer Nurhamizah Othman said a statement would be given soon. -FMT
