South Korea singer dies in van

 
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean singer Go Eun-bi, better known as EunB, died after a van carrying her group Ladies' Code crashed into a guard rail on a rain-drenched highway near Seoul, police said Thursday.

The 22-year-old Go's bandmate RiSe, whose real name is Kwon Ri-sae, was seriously injured in the accident early Wednesday and remained in critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery, officials said.

The band, which debuted last year, was returning to Seoul after recording a TV program in the southeastern city of Daegu, said police inspector Lee Ho-dong.

The group's agency said another band member fractured a bone and two others had minor injuries and were treated for shock.

The driver, who was treated for a minor injury before questioning, may have been speeding on a wet road to meet a tight schedule, Lee said.

"We are investigating the exact cause of the accident. But it's difficult because the highway section where the crash occurred did not have a closed-circuit television camera," Lee said, adding that a camera from inside the van was sent to the National Forensic Service.

Lee said it would likely take about a month before it's determined what caused the crash.

Samsung confident in race against Apple

 
Samsung Electronics is confident that it will stay ahead of Apple in the competition for large-screen “phablet” smartphones.

A phablet, a combination of the words “phone” and “tablet,” refers to a smartphone with the functionality of a tablet computer and featuring a larger front screen.



“We have both the originality and leadership in the global market’s high-end segment for large-screened smartphones, though many other smartphone manufacturers including Apple are increasingly looking into this segment,” said Lee Young-hee, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics’ mobile business division, at a product briefing in Berlin, Wednesday.

“With our long-accumulated experience and know-how in related technologies such as multitasking control and digital pen-writing, I believe we can maintain our leadership.”

Apple is expected to unveil its new smart devices, including the larger-screened sequel to its smartphone iPhone 5s, in an event slated for Sept. 9.

Before the briefing, the electronics giant held an “unpacked” event in the city where IFA 2014, Europe’s most influential tech fair, is scheduled to begin on Sept. 5, and showcased the company’s new smartphones, the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge, as well as other wearable smart devices including its new smartwatch, the Gear S, and a virtual-reality (VR) head-mounted display called the Gear VR.

With the Galaxy Note 4, Samsung Electronics emphasized functions that make everyday life more convenient.

“Aside from its beautiful 2.5-dimensional curved glass design and the 5.7-inch quad high-definition Super AMOLED screen, we have improved functions like multitasking, pen-writing, screen capture, voice recording and fast battery charging. This is because we understand our customers think these basic operations are as important as the fancy and unprecedented technologies that we have shown so far,” Lee said.


She said that since 2011, the company had created a new culture of large smartphones with its Galaxy Note series.

“When the first Galaxy Note was announced, many said it would be a reckless challenge. But now, the word phablet, first used to refer to our Galaxy Note, is widely used around the world,” she said.

Lee continued that the company’s unorthodox products like the Galaxy Note Edge, Gear S and Gear VR should be seen as more of Samsung’s challenges in innovation.

“With these gadgets, we hope to create a culture of smart devices on a different level than simply raising sales volume and market share. We will estimate how many are willing to pay more for such innovations,” she said. “That’s why we try to target specific regions and age brackets for these products. I would say our smartwatch is not just a watch. It’s more about market leadership than sales itself.”

She added that the company planned to release the Galaxy Note Edge and the Gear VR only in specific markets, though they had not decided where. The prices of the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge have not been disclosed yet, though Lee hinted the latter would be more expensive than the former.

Ian Fogg, head of mobile analysis at U.S.-based market research agency IHS Technology, noted the Galaxy Note Edge delivers practical benefits with its curved screen.

“It is a more striking device which is visibly more differentiated from other smartphone markers' devices because of its curved screen,” Fogg said. “But to maximize the differentiation, the company will need third-party app developers to support the edge display.”

Malaysia appeals for truce in Ukraine to gather more remains of MH17 tragedy victims

 
Malaysia is appealing for a truce between the warring factions in Ukraine so that it can gather evidence and any remains left at the site where Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 went down, killing all 298 people on board.

This was stated today by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who said Malaysia was striving hard to have its security and probe teams gain access to the site for at least a week or two weeks.

The government would not stop looking for the rest of the remains of the 43 Malaysian victims of the tragedy, he said. So far, the remains of 31 Malaysian victims have been brought home.

"We will look for every evidence and the rest of the remains at the site. I will not be satisfied unless all the remains have been handed over to the respective families," he said.

Najib said this in his speech after handing over the National Sovereignty Medal to 129 people, among them seven ministers, who had participated in the 'Ops Daulat' operation against armed intruders in Sabah earlier this year.

Flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine on July 17 as it was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 283 passengers and 15 crew on board. The Boeing 777-200 aircraft is believed to have been shot down over the troubled country.

Besides Malaysians, nationals from the Netherlands, Australia, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, the Philippines, Canada and New Zealand were among the 298 people on board.

There have been reports that Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk was not agreeable to the truce proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia is reportedly backing the rebels.

Najib said Malaysia was caught in a geopolitical conflict that had nothing to do with it.

"In facing this major test, I took the unconventional step because I realised that our primary mission is to bring home the remains of the victims.

It is not the intention of Malaysia to get involved in the conflict or take sides, but without engaging with the warring factions it would have been impossible to remove the black boxes and remains from the site," he said.

Najib said the nation's security and efforts to handle the MH17 tragedy, the missing MH370 aircraft and the armed intrusion into Lahad Datu, Sabah, should be stepped up because these issues transcended borders and continents.

These were unexpected events and Malaysia was fortunate because the foreign policy it had adopted and its relations with other countries helped, he said.

"Twenty-six large countries, such as Australia and China, contributed a great deal to the search for MH370 and no country asked Malaysia payment to meet the cost of their search operations," he said.

Flight MH370 dropped off radar on March 8 as it flew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 227 passengers and 12 crew on board. The Boeing 777 aircraft has yet to be found, even after an exhaustive search in the southern Indian Ocean where it is believed to have gone down after veering off course.

China Mobile shares hit HK$100 on iPhone hopes

 
Shares in China Mobile hit HK$100 for the first time in six years during early trading on Wednesday.

Demand for the stock was heavy ahead of Apple’s launch of the latest version of its iPhone, expected later this month, driving positive sentiment about use of 4G services in China.



China Mobile was the first mobile operator to roll out its 4G network, which is the industry’s most developed.

At 11.45am, shares of China Mobile gained 2.96 per cent to HK$100.90, while its smaller rivals China Telecom and China Unicom shed 0.4 per cent and 2.1 per cent, respectively.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index added 1.17 per cent.

Unknown Sabahan probed for secession call

 
KOTA KINABALU: A little-known political activist going by the name of Doris Jones is the focus of police investigations into a Facebook account "Sabah Sarawak Keluar Malaysia" or SSKM.

Many, including those who are "friends" in the closed group, know little about the Sabahan woman, who claims to be a lawyer residing in the United Kingdom.



Her controversial postings over secession and campaigns via YouTube has led police to investigate her and the group's activities that started the Facebook page on Aug 11, 2011.

It could not be ascertained if Doris Jones was operating in the country or overseas. The SSKM group has 25,000 "friends," including a state cabinet minister, opposition leaders, policemen and even journalists.

Many when contacted said they were not aware of Doris Jones' background though they believed she is Sabahan with some law training from the University of London based on her postings in the blogs about herself.

She is believed to be from Penampang although she has not used her maiden name
after settling down in England many years ago.

Following a report, the administrator of the SSKM Facebook page said in a post they were ready to defend themselves in court and stressed that they were defending Sabah and Sarawak.

The group claimed that it was against any form of violence and aimed to achieve its goals through legal means.

On Wednesday, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said investigations have commenced under the Sedition Act and a special task force has been set up to trace individuals and groups behind the Facebook page.

"We believe their actions is a threat to the security of the nation as they are instilling hate and creating disharmony," he said.

It was learned that no arrests have been in connection with the investigations.

Former politician Datuk James Ligunjang, who said he personally knew Doris Jones, said it was best for Putrajaya to listen to grievances of Sabahans instead of taking legal action.

"They should have a roundtable meeting with the people and listen to their grouses," he added.

South Korea singer says he hit girlfriend

 
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Popular South Korean singer and actor Kim Hyun-joong acknowledged he hit his then-girlfriend during an argument in May, police said Wednesday.

The woman, who also hit Kim, was struck multiple times and had bruises on her arms and scratches on her knees, according to police inspector Chung Chae-min, who added that the woman told authorities she needed two weeks of hospital treatment

Kim told police during questioning that the fight was mutual and they became entangled, but he said he didn't remember where he hit her or how often, according to Chung.

"But this wasn't one of those fights where one person got angry and slapped the other person," the police inspector said. "The action was more severe than that."

Chung said Kim and the woman may be questioned further before police decide whether to send the case to prosecutors for a possible indictment.

The 28-year-old Kim debuted with the boy band SS501 in 2005 and then made a splash as an actor. He appeared in the television drama "Boys Over Flowers" in 2009. He is popular throughout Asia.

Kim's agency did not return calls seeking comment.

Phablets, otherwise known as smartphones flaunting near-tablet-sized displays, are all the rage these days. The release of the Cherry Mobile Blaze 2.0 only seems to have upped the ante.



Going by the data sheet alone, the phablet's potential balance of performance and price sounds especially enticing. After all, you're looking at an Android Jelly Bean device packing a high-res 5.7-inch IPS display, a proven quad-core chip, and 12- and 3-megapixel backside-illuminated cameras.

You get all of those features at a low price of P9,499

So, does this massive smartphone deliver where it matters? Is it too big? Is it even worth the upgrade? We'll try our darnedest to answer these questions and more in our review of the Cherry Mobile Blaze 2.0.

Hardware

One thing that strikes you about the second-generation Blaze is its massive hardware, owing to its substantial front real estate. At 5.7 inches diagonally, it's one of the largest smartphones we've handled. It is simply too big for our hands, making it hard for us to use one-handed for extended periods of time.

Of course, being big and HD-savvy has its merits, as we'll discuss later.
The dual-finish casing—one part glossy, one part matte—is one of the first things you’ll notice, too. While others may welcome the use of different finishes, we'd argue that the poorly executed two-faced design ultimately does a disservice to this Cherry Mobile.

Adding to the inconsistency is a Samsung-inspired physical home button located at the bottom-center of the Cherry Mobile Blaze 2.0's front side, just below the display. It makes little sense, seeing that the phablet already has a set of onscreen navigation keys for back, home, and multitask.
While we agree that two home keys are better than one, this particular device would have been better off sporting a cleaner and shorter bezel than a longer one with a redundant hardware button.

Display and specs

As we've touched on earlier, this phablet is considerably bigger than most, wielding a 5.7-inch display that's bolstered by a 720 x 1,280 resolution and in-plane switching tech for vibrant colors and better viewing angles.

The picture quality is lovely for a device this affordable, and as such, we wholeheartedly recommend it for viewing content and watching movies.

The internals of the Cherry Mobile Blaze 2.0 is headlined by a MediaTek-made MT6589 chipset, paired with a familiar set of silicon: a quad-core processor operating at 1.2GHz, PowerVR SGX544 graphics, and 1GB of RAM.

Microsoft Teases Windows 9 by Mistake

 
The Redmond giant's next Windows version, expected to be called Windows 9 and is officially codenamed Threshold, has been teased by the company on Weibo, the China-equivalent of Twitter.

Microsoft China in a Weibo post teased the upcoming Windows version as "coming soon". The post said (in Chinese), "Microsoft's latest OS Windows 9 is coming soon, do you think the start menu at the left bottom will make a comeback?" Interestingly, the post was accompanied by a Windows 9 mock-up logo.



The post was soon pulled down by the Redmond giant; however, CNBeta spotted the post and it was also later picked up by the Verge. While the Weibo post does not reveal any new feature of the next Windows version or even its official logo, it surely fuels speculations that Microsoft will soon give the world its first glimpse of Windows 9.

An earlier report had suggested that Microsoft is planning to hold an event on September 30 to provide developers a look at Windows 9. The report tipped that the introduction would be aimed at developers behind programs designed for computers powered by Windows software, while Microsoft is expected to release a developer preview as early as October before releasing a public preview by the end of the year.

Reports have been tipping that Microsoft will likely modify Windows 9 to offer different features on different form factors. Notably, the ARM-based Windows RT Threshold tablets (as well as smartphones, with the unifying Threshold update) are said to feature, barring a few exceptional devices, the Modern UI only, with no way to switch to the desktop mode or use regular Win32 applications.

Rumours have been claiming that only laptops, desktops and AIOs would feature the desktop mode, with the new Start Menu the single place where desktop users will be able to interact with the Modern UI and its apps - the Start Menu that's expected to be re-introduced is also said to be expandable to full screen to become like the Start Screen. On the other hand, Modern UI 2.0 included is said to feature a Windows Phone 8.1-like Notification Centre.

Also expected to be included in Windows 9 is support for virtual desktops, as well as the removal of the Charms Bar for certain form factors. Previous reports had further tipped that apart from the re-introduction of the Start Menu, the next iteration of Windows will allow users to use Modern UI apps in Windowed mode.

2015 VW Jetta CC Could be This?

 
While others in New York are trying to busy trying to determine what they gave to the new Volkswagen Jetta, those at the Beijing Auto Show are getting excited with the New Midsize Coupe Study.



The study is a four door coupe that is said to be slightly shorter than the Jetta but wider than the Volkswagen Passat. This could mean that the concept we are looking at is the CC that have been speculated for some time now.

The CC is said to be based on the next Jetta sedan. Powering it is a 220PS powertrain that allows the car to go from 0 to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds and can reach a top speed of 245km/h.

The information about the future of the concept has been scarce. Hopefully Volkswagen will release more information on the concept and the production car that it will be based on.

Celeb Hack Exposes Holes In Digital Security

 
More than 100 celebrities are thought to be victims of this latest hacking scandal but the perpetrator is yet to come forward.



As the FBI investigates how nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and model Kate Upton, among others, came to be posted on 4chan.org, a conversation has begun about the difficulties of maintaining our privacy in this digital age.

Many of the photos have proved to be genuine and there are differing theories for how they were obtained.

Some cyber security experts speculated that hackers may have obtained the images by exploiting weaknesses in an online image-storing platform.

Apple is also investigating whether its iCloud has been compromised.

"It is important for celebrities and the general public to remember that images and data no longer just reside on the device that captured it," security researcher Ken Westin wrote in a blog post.

"Once images and other data are uploaded to the cloud, it becomes much more difficult to control who has access to it, even if we think it is private."

Other celebrities who were not affected by the leak have been urging the public not to view the photos and thus perpetuate the problem.

British actress Emma Watson wrote on Twitter: "Even worse than seeing women's privacy violated on social media is reading the accompanying comments that show such a lack of empathy."

American actress Lena Dunham said the person responsible for leaking the pictures was "a sex offender" and anyone looking at them was "violating these women again and again".

Private information and images of celebrities are frequent targets for hackers. Last year, a site posted credit reports, federal Social Security numbers and other financial info on celebrities, including Jay Z and his wife Beyonce, Mel Gibson, Ashton Kutcher and many others.

However, the law on crimes like this is not yet set in stone.

Most websites which host photos, such as 4chan.org, are protected by a federal law which absolves them of responsibility for material posted by third parties.

Prosecution will depend on knowing who uploaded the photo and where it originated.

Cloud technology specialist James Sinclair told Sky News everyone must take responsibility for protecting themselves.

"Everything digital goes somewhere. Knowing that, you have to take good steps which is don't use the same usernames and passwords on every website, keep them cryptic and use two-factor authentication if you can.

"When data goes into a digital format it becomes a threat," he added.

Some have blamed the celebrities themselves for posing for the photographs, including Ricky Gervais who backtracked and deleted his tweet after a backlash from users.

But most people seem to agree with Lawrence's publicist - the hack was a "flagrant violation of privacy" - and the hope is that this time, the criminals behind the action will be tracked down and convicted.

“Obviously, seeing Danny leave, he’s been there from a very young age, eight-years-old, and his heart was in Manchester so I’m sure he’s sad to leave Manchester United but, for Arsenal, I think they’ve got a young, talented English player.

“But, obviously, to see him leave Manchester United, as a Manchester United fan, is sad but I’m not a manager.”

Beckham also praised Louis van Gaal, despite the Dutchman securing just two points from his opening three Premier League games, and believes that there will be more youngsters to roll off the Old Trafford production line in the near future.

“I’m definitely not the United manager and, I think, with Van Gaal, he’s a talented manager, he’s well respected and with Manchester United, this is a project," said Beckham.

“It’s a project that’s hopefully going to last for quite a few years and hopefully we’ve still got a lot of young players coming through but seeing Danny leave, I thought he was a very talented player and definitely one for the future, and still will be, just not in Manchester.”

As naked photos and explicit videos of celebrities have apparently been leaked online, here's what you need to know about Apple's iCloud service
Apple is investigating after explicit pictures of celebrities were apparently leaked online.



The leak has been linked to iCloud, Apple's cloud service, but it has not been confirmed.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris says the firm is looking into the matter.

The Hunger Game actress Jennifer Lawrence, model Cara Delevingne and former Downton Abbey star Jessica Brown Findlay are among those whose videos and photos were apparently leaked.

iCloud is a wireless storage facility which can be used to access files remotely.

It allows users to save pictures, videos, contacts and emails among other files across a range of Apple devices, which can then be accessed over the internet.

How safe is iCloud?

It is generally considered extremely safe. Data is encrypted both on Apple's servers and while in transit from your device, and the company maintains the master key. Official Apple apps use secure tokens to authenticate an account, eliminating the need to store user names and passwords within the apps themselves.

How were the pictures leaked?

It hasn't been confirmed whether this is definitely down to iCloud, but reports suggest the photos might have been accessed because of an attack on Apple users' passwords.

A piece of computer code that repeatedly guesses passwords has been found in an online post. The script was posted to software site GitHub, but a message has since appeared saying that Apple had fixed the bug.

According to the post, the script uses the top 500 most common passwords approved by Apple to try to gain access to user accounts. If successful, it would give the hacker full access to the iCloud account, including photographs.

The issue has been linked to a flaw in the 'Find my iPhone' service which has now been fixed.

Other notable cloud services include Dropbox and Google Drive, which enable users to keep more of their files close to hand without taking up huge amounts of memory on their devices.

MCA, MIC condemn Zahid’s statement on non-Muslims

 
The MCA Youth is appalled with Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and demands he apologise to all Malaysians for his offensive remark about non-Malays.



The Sun daily reported that Ahmad Zahid had said non-Malays were arrogant and were insulting bumiputeras, the royalty and Islam, when launching the Umno Segambut divisional meeting yesterday.

MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon said the statement by Ahmad Zahid was abhorrent, atrocious and heinous by generalising that all non-Malays were arrogant and had insulted bumiputeras, the royalty and/or Islam.

He said the truth was that all Malaysians regardless of race, ethnicity and religion had been living harmoniously to build and develop this nation together, except for a few who had been trying to break this peace and harmony that we have been enjoying for the past 57 years.

“It is wrong for him to generalise and accuse all non-Malays of this.
“This seriously contradicts the basis of the objective and principle of 1Malaysia which forms the backbone of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s administration.”

He said MCA Youth supported that action be taken in accordance with the law against those had insulted any race, ethnicity and/ or religion, as well as those who had insulted royalty.

“We support the Home Minister and the Attorney-General in taking swift and proper action against those who have broken or attempted to break the peaceful and harmonious relationship shared by Malaysians.”

MIC Youth chief C. Sivarraajh said only politicians who lacked ideas or political will would embark on racial issues to gain or retain their support.

He said although this might work in the short term, they forgot that future voters, including Malays who were professionals and better educated, would not believe in racism or affirmative policies.

“Ahmad Zahid should not have made the remarks.

“I think our Prime Minister has crafted a beautiful 1Malaysia concept to bring the nation to greater heights beyond race and political boundaries,” he told The Rakyat Post.

He said Ahmad Zahid had been shown bias with his statement as until now the police had not acted on slanderous and racist comments made by Dr Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, Ustaz Shahul Hamid, Datuk Zulkifli Noordin and others.

He said ministers like Ahmad Zahid needed to be cautious with their words as they would taint the government’s image.

“The country and its leaders must move beyond racial lines if the nation intends to acheive the targets it has set like becoming a higher income nation and Vision 2020.”

However, Zahid was later reported by The Star as saying that his remarks had been taken out of context.

He explained that what he had said was in reference to leaders and supporters of DAP, and that these people lacked respect for the feelings of Malays.

Azmi faces sedition charge

 
Uni­versiti Malaya law lecturer Assoc Prof Dr Azmi Sharom (pic) is expected to be charged with sedition today over comments made on an online portal over the 2009 Perak crisis.



He is expected to be charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948.

Under the section, anyone who utters any seditious words faces a fine of not more than RM5,000, a jail term of not more than three years, or both, if found guilty.

Azmi declined to comment on the possibility of him being charged for making the statements.

The English online portal reported that the law professor was previously under probe for his quotes in an article titled, “Take Perak crisis route for speedy end to Selangor impasse, Pakatan told”, which was published on Aug 14.

Azmi is an associate professor at the Faculty of Law of the university.

He obtained his PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London after completing his studies in University of Nottingham and University of Sheffield.

His areas of expertise are both the Malaysian and International Envi­ronmental Law and the Conflict of Laws.

Azmi is also president of the Universiti Malaya academic staff union .

He is the latest to be caught in the recent sedition dragnet, following last Thursday’s charging of Padang Serai MP N. Surendran at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

Surendran is alleged to have committed the offence at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya in his capacity as counsel for Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim by saying in a YouTube video that the Sodomy 2 proceedings against Anwar were “an attempt to jail the opposition leader of Malaysia”.

Surendran was previously charged on Aug 19 for allegedly making statements regarding the judgment of the appellate court in Anwar’s second sodomy case in a YouTube video.
